Monta was founded in 2016 in St. Louis, Missouri, by Michael DiMartini and the team behind Everest Bands, a maker of rubber straps for Rolex sports watches. The brand designs in the United States and has its watches built and assembled in Switzerland, using Sellita automatic movements made to the company's specification; bracelets and clasps are of its own design, including a clasp with tool-free micro-adjustment. The first model, the Oceanking, was a dive watch rated to 300 m (1,000 ft).

Later lines include the Triumph (a field watch), the Atlas and Skyquest (GMTs) and the Noble (an everyday sports model). Monta remains an independent company.
