Halios was founded in Vancouver in 2009 by Jason Lim, who still runs the company largely on his own. It was among the earlier independent labels to sell directly online in small pre-order batches; cases and components come from manufacturing partners in Asia, Switzerland, Germany and the United States, and final inspection and testing take place in Vancouver. Movements are Japanese or Swiss automatics, chosen by model and availability.

The early catalogue consisted of dive watches such as the Puck, Tropik and Laguna. The Seaforth, introduced in 2017 with a slim case and a choice of bezels and dials, became the model most associated with the brand and has been reissued in several series, most recently the Seaforth IV of 2023. In 2019, the brand's tenth year, Halios presented the Fairwind, a dive watch with a more angular case, and the time-only Universa, both delivered on bracelets. Production runs are small and usually sell out on release.
